Lee

Winter 2020

Lee is a junior at the Stamps School of Art and Design at the University of Michigan. Lee isn't a typical Michigan student: they live in Ypsilanti, and their commute takes about an hour, if not more, by public bus. However, Lee never really complained about the ride, and simply said that they had gotten used to it. While spending time with Lee, I had the privilege to have great conversations with them, including how they practice non-monogamy. It was endearing to hear about what Lee appreciated in each of their partners. Lee’s lively conversations with their roommate Seb occur almost every night in their shared bathroom after they get home from their long shifts (Lee’s are at the Stamps equipment center and Seb’s are at Target). Lee and Seb co-exist with their house cat, Rowen, who enjoys knocking over Lee’s plants in their room and climbing onto Lee’s shoulders. Lee is one of the most nurturing and respectful people I have ever met, and photographing them in moments that were celebratory, quiet, intimate, and vulnerable, is something I will never forget.
